A watercolour painting of a dynamic street scene in Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia.
I painted this scene while sitting on a balcony outside a restaurant. I was amazed by how busy the street was and how purposefully everyone went about their business.
The high rise buildings are constructed beneath a framework of scaffolding made from tree-branches lashed together. The workmen do not wear any protective clothing and they travel up and down the storeys of the building in a hand-operated lift! I wanted to create a quick sketch that would capture all the energy and movement that was happening right in front of me.
