Lino Cutting Workshop

What a lovely afternoon I have spent with a super group of talented local artists- some of whom weren't even aware of their artistic talents until today.

As always I was stunned by the ability and creativity of my workshop group, especially by those who said they had never done lino cutting before.

Here we see everyone proudly holding up their work outside the gallery. It's great to see a bunch of grown-ups doing this, it's not only kids who can have fun and get creative.

I provided some ideas as a starting point, on the theme of Easter or Spring- though this was not compulsory! I gave everyone a small piece of lino and a pre-cut card and envelope. The idea was to create a greeting card each, to send out, which would in turn promote their own work, my workshops and the Elizabeth James Gallery.

I also provided a range of different papers and coloured inks so that the group could try out multiple combinations. It was very interesting to see how different everyone's work was, and to see such a great range of ideas.

This is a really beautiful image of a blue-tit on a branch and it shows how versatile lino is, just by using one colour and a couple of blades of different thicknesses you can achieve a stunning effect.

On the right is a superb example of a simple design that could be used for business promotion- it's such a clear and striking portrait image.

On the left are two members of the group who very quickly gained confidence in their ability to cut lino, with fantastic results.

The cute sloth design really works well with the different backgrounds and colours.

The camera design (below left) is another great image that could be used for business promotion- especially as it was created

by a photographer!

I have many more lovely images from the day- please take a look at my facebook page for more.

Here is some of the feedback I received at the end of the day:

"Really lovely workshop- felt I had achieved a huge amount by the end of the day"

"Thank you! Lovely way to spend a Saturday afternoon."

"Lovely to work in a friendly group."

"Had no idea what would be involved and was really nervous but loved it."

"It was easy to do without experience. Zoe's examples showed that even beginners were welcome."

"Well pleased. Loved it. Good Saturday afternoon x."

Thank you everyone for coming- I can't wait for the next one on !on Thank you all for coming- here's to the next one on May 20th!
